Mentor Families

What is a Mentor Family?

Mentor families are families that are selected from local faith communities to serve as role models to the homeowner families. We will attempt to have each homeowner family represented by several mentor families.

What kind of training is provided?

Each mentor family receives training on how to serve in this volunteer role. This training includes education about the sensitivity to the culture of poverty, do's and don'ts in regard to meeting with homeowner families, and how to facilitate family bonding activities. A workshop is also presented to mentors on activities to participate in with the homeowner families for low or no-cost. A security background check is also done.

What is the time obligation?

Each mentor family will meet monthly with their assigned homeowner family to share time and activities together, such as taking kids to the park, renting a movie and making popcorn, visiting the library, etc. These activities can usually be planned for a weekend afternoon or a weekday evening, as schedules permit.

To apply:

WYFHOP is seeking families with school-age children as well as couples with grown children to serve as mentor families. If you are interested, please download an application. If you have any questions, contact Terry Williams.
